Public IP vs private IP

Your public IP address is the address your internet provider assigns to your whole network - it's how websites and services see you. Your private IP (like 192.168.1.42) is used only inside your home to identify each device, and your router translates between the two.

Why does my IP change?

Most home connections use a dynamic public IP that your ISP can rotate periodically. A static IP stays fixed but usually costs extra. Restarting your router or modem often triggers a new dynamic IP.

IPv4 vs IPv6

You may see a short address like 203.0.113.7 (IPv4) or a longer one with colons like 2001:db8::1 (IPv6). Both identify your connection; IPv6 exists because the world ran out of IPv4 addresses.
