Login to your Arris router

Opens your router's admin login page. Works only on your own network.

How you log in to an Arris device depends on whether it is a gateway with built-in Wi-Fi or a standalone SURFboard cable modem. A gateway opens at 192.168.0.1, while a SURFboard modem opens at 192.168.100.1. Both commonly use admin and password, but newer SURFboard modems force you to create a password on first login. This guide sorts out which you have and walks through each case.

First, Know Which Arris Device You Have

This is the step that prevents most of the confusion.

  • Arris gateways are combo units that include Wi-Fi, with model names like SBG and TG. You manage everything here, including your Wi-Fi name and password. They open at 192.168.0.1.
  • Arris SURFboard modems are standalone cable modems, like the SB6190 and SB8200, with no Wi-Fi of their own. They open at 192.168.100.1, and that page is mainly for status and diagnostics. Your Wi-Fi lives on a separate router connected to the modem, not on the modem itself.

If you are not sure, check whether the device broadcasts its own Wi-Fi. If it does, it is a gateway at 192.168.0.1. If your Wi-Fi comes from a separate router, the Arris is a modem at 192.168.100.1.

How to Log In to an Arris Device

  1. Connect your computer to the Arris device, over Wi-Fi for a gateway or with an Ethernet cable for a standalone modem.
  2. Open a web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
  3. Click the address bar at the top of the browser. Do not use the search box.
  4. Type the address for your device: 192.168.0.1 for a gateway, or 192.168.100.1 for a SURFboard modem. Be careful not to type the letter I or O in place of the digits 1 and 0.
  5. Enter the username and password. See the table below.

Default Username and Password for Arris Devices

Arris deviceLogin addressUsernamePassword
Arris gateway (SBG, TG)192.168.0.1adminpassword
SURFboard modem (newer)192.168.100.1adminthe password you set at first login
SURFboard modem (older)192.168.100.1adminpassword

If the admin/password does not work, the credentials were changed, or your model uses a value printed on the sticker on the side or bottom of the device. Check the label before assuming anything is wrong.

The Forced Password Change on Newer SURFboard Modems

This catches a lot of people, and it is worth explaining because the quick-start card does not always make it clear. On newer SURFboard modems like the SB8200, the printed default of admin/password is not actually accepted as a login. Instead, the first time you reach 192.168.100.1, the modem makes you create a new unique password before it grants access.

So if you type admin/password and it is rejected, you are not doing anything wrong, the modem is waiting for you to set your own password. One more thing to know: after a few failed attempts, these modems lock you out for about five minutes before you can try again. If that happens, wait it out rather than hammering the login.

How to Change Your Wi-Fi Password on an Arris Gateway

This applies to gateways with built-in Wi-Fi. Standalone SURFboard modems have no Wi-Fi to change, since that comes from your separate router.

  1. Log in at 192.168.0.1.
  2. Open Wireless Settings, then the Basic Setup tab.
  3. Under the Wireless 2.4 GHz section, enter your new network name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) field.
  4. Enter your new Wi-Fi password in the Pre-Shared Key field.
  5. Click Apply to save.

If your gateway is dual-band, repeat for the 5 GHz section. After saving, every device drops off the Wi-Fi and reconnects with the new key. Use a password of at least 12 characters with no personal details.

What to Do If You Cannot Log In

The page will not load. Confirm the address and that you are connected to the Arris device.

  • On Windows: press Windows + R, type cmd, and run ipconfig. Read the “Default Gateway” line.
  • On a phone: open your Wi-Fi network details and look for the gateway or router field.
  • Remember a gateway uses 192.168.0.1 and a standalone modem uses 192.168.100.1. Some models also use 192.168.1.254.

You typed a letter instead of a number

A common slip is mistaking the 1 for an I or the 0 for an O. Retype the address using digits only.

admin/password is rejected on a SURFboard modem

That is expected on newer models, which require you to set a password on first login. If you have already set one, use that. If you are locked out from failed attempts, wait five minutes.

You got search results

The address went into a search engine, not the address bar. Click the bar at the very top of the window, clear it, type the address, and press Enter.

How to Reset an Arris Device to Factory Settings

A factory reset erases everything: on a gateway, the Wi-Fi name and password and all settings; on a modem, the login password. The device returns to how it shipped, so reset only when you are locked out and have no other way in.

  1. With the device powered on, find the Reset button, a recessed pinhole on the back.
  2. Use a pin or paperclip to press and hold it for about 15 seconds, until the lights blink.
  3. Release and wait a few minutes for the device to restart and re-sync with your ISP.
  4. Log in again with the defaults, or set a new password if the modem prompts you.

For a cable modem, note that after a reset it may need a few minutes to reconnect to your ISP’s network before your internet returns.

Conclusion

The most important thing when logging into an Arris device is knowing whether you have a Wi-Fi gateway or a standalone SURFboard modem. Arris gateways with built-in Wi-Fi are usually accessed through 192.168.0.1 and often use admin/password as the default login, while standalone SURFboard modems open at 192.168.100.1. On many newer SURFboard models, you will be asked to create your own password the first time you log in, so the traditional admin/password combination may not work at all. If your login is rejected on a newer model, that is completely normal. Simply set up your own password and be careful not to make too many failed attempts in a row, as the device can temporarily lock access for several minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the default username and password for an Arris router?

For Arris gateways it is usually admin/password at 192.168.0.1. SURFboard modems use 192.168.100.1, and newer ones make you create a password on first login rather than accepting admin/password. Check the sticker on the device.

Why is admin/password not working on my SURFboard modem?

Newer SURFboard modems like the SB8200 require you to set your own password the first time you log in, so the printed default is not accepted. After failed attempts they also lock you out for about five minutes, so wait before retrying.

What is the difference between 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.100.1 for Arris?

192.168.0.1 is for Arris gateways that include Wi-Fi. 192.168.100.1 is the diagnostics page for standalone SURFboard cable modems, which have no Wi-Fi of their own. Use the one that matches your device.

I cannot change my Wi-Fi on my Arris modem. Why?

A standalone SURFboard modem has no Wi-Fi to change, since the modem only provides the internet connection. Your Wi-Fi comes from a separate router, so log in to that router to change the network name and password.

Can I log in to my Arris device from my phone?

Yes, for a gateway. Connect to its Wi-Fi and open 192.168.0.1 in a browser. For a standalone modem, a wired connection to a computer is more reliable for reaching 192.168.100.1.

I forgot my Arris password. What can I do?

Check the sticker on the device for the default. If it was changed and you cannot recall it, a factory reset restores the defaults, though it also wipes a gateway's Wi-Fi settings.
