Edimax Setup: Routers and Extenders
Edimax is a Taiwanese networking brand making routers, Wi-Fi extenders, access points, and adapters. Edimax setup differs by device type: routers log in at 192.168.2.1 with admin and 1234, while extenders are configured through the EdimaxEXT.Setup network and the iQ Setup wizard. This guide covers both, so you can set up whichever Edimax device you have.
Edimax Router Setup
Edimax routers use an address most brands do not: 192.168.2.1, in the 192.168.2.x range. The router assigns your devices addresses from 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.199.
- Connect your computer to the router, ideally with an Ethernet cable into a LAN port, with the internet cable in the WAN port.
- Open a browser, click the address bar at the top, type 192.168.2.1, and press Enter.
- Enter the username admin and the password 1234, the Edimax defaults across most models, then log in.
- Follow the setup wizard to configure your internet connection and Wi-Fi, or head straight to the settings you need.
The credentials are case-sensitive, and the label on the router lists the exact details for your unit. A handful of models reverse the combination as 1234/admin, so try both if one fails.
Changing your Edimax router’s Wi-Fi
- Log in at 192.168.2.1.
- Select Interface Setup, then Wireless. On dual-band models, pick 2.4GHz Wireless or 5GHz Wireless.
- Enter your new network name in the SSID field.
- Enter your new password in the Pre-Shared Key field.
- Click Save.
Devices reconnect with the new details after saving. Use a password of at least 12 characters.
Edimax Extender Setup
Edimax extenders, like the popular EW-7438RPn series, use their own setup flow with the iQ Setup wizard.
- Plug in the extender near your router, about halfway to the weak area at most, and wait for it to power up.
- Connect to the extender’s default network. On a phone or computer, open your Wi-Fi settings and connect to the network named EdimaxEXT.Setup followed by characters.
- Open a browser and go to http://edimaxext.setup. If that does not load, use the IP address, 192.168.9.2 on newer units or 192.168.2.2 on older ones like the EW-7438RPn.
- If prompted for credentials, enter admin and 1234.
- Click Get Started. If your device supports multiple modes, choose one:
- Wi-Fi Extender: connects wirelessly to your network and repeats the signal, the usual choice.
- Wi-Fi Adapter/Bridge: gives a wired device like a games console wireless access.
- Wi-Fi Access Point: connects to your router by Ethernet cable and broadcasts Wi-Fi at full speed, like a dedicated access point.
- Let iQ Setup scan. The wizard scans for networks. Select your 2.4 GHz network, enter your Wi-Fi password, and click Next.
- Complete the wizard. The extended network is created, and you reconnect to it to finish.
Managing the extender later
To change the extender’s settings after setup, connect to its network, go to edimaxext.setup, log in with admin and 1234 (or your changed password), and select Interface Setup, then Wireless, to edit the SSID and Pre-Shared Key.
A Fallback for Stubborn Setups
If the extender’s setup page will not load, Edimax’s own support suggests a wired fallback: connect your computer to the extender with an Ethernet cable, temporarily disable your computer’s Wi-Fi, and set a manual IP in the extender’s range, such as 192.168.2.30 with subnet 255.255.255.0 for older units. Then browse to the extender’s IP address. Remember to set your computer back to obtaining an address automatically afterward.
What to Do If Setup Will Not Work
192.168.2.1 will not load for a router. Confirm your gateway with ipconfig on Windows and
read the Default Gateway line, as our
find your router’s IP address guide explains. Make sure your
computer is set to obtain an IP automatically and you are connected to the Edimax network.
edimaxext.setup will not load for an extender. Confirm you are connected to the EdimaxEXT.Setup network, not your home Wi-Fi. Try the IP address directly, 192.168.9.2 or 192.168.2.2 by model, and use the wired fallback above if needed.
admin/1234 is rejected. Try 1234/admin, which some models use, and check the label. If the password was changed and lost, reset the device.
The extender keeps dropping. Move it closer to the router, away from microwaves, cordless phones, and other interference sources, and check for a firmware update.
You need to reset. Hold the device’s Reset button for about 10 to 15 seconds until the lights change, then run the setup again with the defaults.
Wrapping Up
Edimax setup comes down to knowing which device you have: routers live at 192.168.2.1 with admin and 1234, while extenders are configured through the EdimaxEXT.Setup network at edimaxext.setup, using the iQ Setup wizard and a choice of extender, bridge, or access point modes. The 192.168.2.x range is the brand’s signature, so a quick gateway check clears up any address confusion, and the wired fallback with a manual IP rescues the rare setup that will not cooperate.
Frequently asked questions
What is the default login for an Edimax router?
The username is admin and the password is 1234, at 192.168.2.1. This applies across most Edimax models, with a few reversing it as 1234/admin. The label on the router lists the exact details for your unit.
What is the default IP address for Edimax?
Edimax routers use 192.168.2.1, and assign devices addresses from 192.168.2.100 to 199. Extenders use 192.168.9.2 on newer units or 192.168.2.2 on older ones, alongside the edimaxext.setup web address.
How do I set up an Edimax Wi-Fi extender?
Plug it in, connect to the EdimaxEXT.Setup network, and go to edimaxext.setup in a browser. Log in with admin and 1234 if asked, click Get Started, choose Wi-Fi Extender mode, select your 2.4 GHz network in the iQ Setup wizard, enter your password, and finish.
What is iQ Setup?
iQ Setup is Edimax's built-in setup wizard for its extenders and access points. It scans for nearby networks and walks you through connecting the device to your Wi-Fi step by step, which is the standard way to configure an Edimax extender.
What modes do Edimax extenders support?
Typically three: Wi-Fi Extender, which repeats your signal wirelessly, Wi-Fi Adapter or Bridge, which gives a wired device wireless access, and Wi-Fi Access Point, which broadcasts full-speed Wi-Fi over an Ethernet connection to your router.
How do I change my Edimax Wi-Fi password?
Log in, 192.168.2.1 for a router or edimaxext.setup for an extender, and select Interface Setup, then Wireless. Enter a new SSID and put your new password in the Pre-Shared Key field, then Save. On dual-band models, set each band separately.
